On August 24, 2013, Logan County deputies were dispatched by Logan 911 Center to respond to 2209 Thunder Road at Godby Heights in Logan County for a complaint of several unattended children.
Upon arrival, Deputy J. L. Mathis and Deputy J. A. Lyall knocked on the front door of the residence and announced Sheriff’s Department.
They were met by three children ranging from ages five to thirteen years of age. Once deputies were inside, they located a fourth child, which was a one-year-old infant asleep on the couch.
Deputies asked the children if they knew where their parents were and were told no, but that they stayed at that particular residence with their mother. The children told deputies that they asked their mother where she was going before she left and she told them that it was none of their business. The children told deputies that was not the first time that their mother had left them unattended without electricity, telephone, or food, it had happened several times.
The residence did not have electricity and there was no food. Deputies found several bags of trash, which were pouring out into the floor, located inside the residence. There were no beds for the children, who told officers they slept on the couches of the residence. Deputy Mathis had 911 call for Child Protective Service assistance to get the children placement until deputies could locate the mother. The children had a small flashlight which was used by them to go throughout the residence and to care for their one-year-old sibling.
At approximately 11:45 p.m. the mother, who was found to be Kellie Odella Workman, came back to the residence and stated that she had been out and refused to tell deputies where she had been in fear of getting someone in trouble. Deputies found a clear cellophane package containing 1 ½ small oval shaped pill believed to be Xanax on her person and they also located a pipe between the front seats of the her vehicle with a green residue believed to be marijuana.
Ms. Workman, 36, of Mount Gay, was arrested by deputies for four counts of child abuse creating risk of injury and two counts of possession of controlled substance.
