The 2012 season came to a close for the Chapmanville Regional High School football team with Friday night’s 48-15 loss at Class AAA Point Pleasant.
The Tigers finished 4-6 — their first losing season since 2005.
Chapmanville will also be missing the Class AA playoffs for the first time in six years.
Chase Walton led Point Pleasant as he scored four touchdowns. Marquez Griffin ran for 203 yards on 10 carries as the Black Knights beat Chapmanville for the third time in two years.
Walton caught touchdown passes of 36 and 10 yards from quarterback Aden Yates, who connected on 7-of-9 passes for 87 yards. Walton added TD runs of 10 and 42 and had 53 receiving yards.
Griffin also had a 70-yard touchdown run and Yates also fired a 12-yard scoring strike to Brycen Reymond.
Point Pleasant eliminated the Tigers from last year’s Class AA playoffs with a 33-13 victory over Chapmanville in the state semifinals, also played at Point.
Point Pleasant improved to 8-2 and entered the game ranked No. 12 in the state in Class AAA.
It’s the last game in the series between the two teams. The Tigers are expected to drop Point Pleasant in 2013 and add Mingo Central, which joined the Cardinal Conference this season. The Miners won their season finale on Friday with a 44-0 home win at Newtown over Herbert Hoover in league action. Mingo Central has gone 5-5 in each of its two seasons since consolidation.
Chapmanville was led by senior running back DaShawn Alexander, who ran for 46 yards on 12 carries.
Senior quarterback Brandon White was 5-for-10 passing for 74 yards with a 4-yard scoring strike to Dustin Smith in the first quarter and a 30-yard TD pass to Brady Cox late in the game.
Point Pleasant and Chapmanville were tied 7-7 after one quarter.
The Black Knights then outscored the Tigers 28-0 in the second to take a 35-7 halftime lead. Point then coasted in the second half.
Point Pleasant is expected to get a low seed for this week’s Class AAA playoffs and will have to travel for a first-round playoff game.
The Black Knights lost to Wayne in last year’s 2A state championship game at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Smith finished with eight carries for 42 yards and four catches for 58 yards.
