MAN –While visiting the Town of Man for a football game, fans from the opposing team took time out to vandalize the town’s sign.
It was a challenge for the town to get their $20,000 electronic sign installed and working. It took weeks to set the sign up earlier this year; then the weather caused another delay to its operation.
Mayor Jim Blevins said, “We worked so hard for two weeks to set the sign up. Then the storm hit last summer and power to the sign was off for four months.”
The sign whose message of welcome, time and temperature had additional messages spray painted on it the night of the football game between rival schools Man and Chapmanville.
“Chapmanville Rules” and “Man Sucks” were among messages responsible for $750 in damages to the sign.
Mayor Blevins offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of the vandal or vandals responsible. After a few dead ends, Mayor Blevins got a call with information that led to those responsible.
“First, we interviewed one young man who admitted causing the damage and promised to pay for repairs,” said Blevins, ”Then he led us to another young man who was also involved.”
Material to repair the sign has to come from Florida. Mayor Blevins says the parts to replace will be fairly easy to install and he looks forward to having the sign back in operation and paint free.
