The Chapmanville Middle School girls’ basketball team opened the season with a 42-29 win at Poca Middle School last Thursday night.
The Lady Tigers (1-0) were led by Abigail Marcum with 23 points.
Lexi Martin followed with eight points, while Hollie Carter and Richelle Thompson had four points each and Alyson Bragg chipped in with three.
Poca was led by Emily Whitting’s eight-point effort.
“It’s always good to get a win, especially on the the road,” CMS coach Tommy Kirk said. “We played well in the second and third quarters and got a nice lead, but for the most part we shot the ball very poorly. We worked hard on defense and did a pretty good job.”
Next up for the CMS girls is the annual Chapmanville Middle School Holiday Tournament. The girls’ field consists of Burch, Harts and Guyan Valley. Tournament play begins Thursday night at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The boys’ field consists of Man, Burch and Lenore.
In JV action, the CMS girls defeated Poca, 23-21 in its season opener.
Beth Ball led the way with 10 points followed by Reese Ellis with five, Kaylee Blair with four and Madison Webb and Chloe Sweeney with two points each.
The JV team also traveled to Wayne and came away with two more wins.
The sixth-grade JV girls defeated Wayne, 27-26. Chloe Sweeney led Chapmanville with eight points. She was followed by Reese Ellis with six and Madison Webb and Tabitha Adkins with five each. Shea Pridemore had two and Kelsey Lemon nailed a foul shot with six seconds on the clock to ice the win.
The CMS seventh-grade team defeated Wayne, 53-16. Kaylle Blair paced Chapmanville with a 16-point game. She was followed by Nadia Perry with 13, Beth Ball with seven and Cheyenne Armstrong with six points. Haven Adkins tallied five points, Brooklyn Evans four and Jacy Baxter two.
