ARACOMA — The Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Program will take place on Monday, January 21, 2013, 6 p.m. at the Cole Street Missionary Baptist Church of Aracoma.
For more than 20 years, the well-attended event has been sponsored by the Guyan Valley Missionary Baptist Association (GVMBA), which is comprised of 11 churches in Logan and Boone Counties.
Pollard is the Moderator of the GVMBA and has worked with organizing this event every year. He and Cora Lee Hairston have been invited to speak at area schools during Black History Month, sharing and celebrating stories of and achievements by African Americans in U.S. history.
Over the years, programs at the annual event have included films about the Civil Rights Movement, music and guest speakers from both inside and outside of the association. Every year, efforts are made to include as many local people as possible in the program.
“The program is not to praise the man, but to give him his due and thank God for sending him,” said Rev. Mike Pollard, “He was a Godsend. It took a long time to have this day set aside to honor him, and we are going to celebrate it.”
This year’s program includes music by the Guyan Valley Men’s Chorus and Cora Lee Hairston will perform her “Rosa Parks Portrayal.” The guest speaker will be Pastor Shaun Woods of the Maranatha Missionary Baptist Church of Madison.
“This event is for everyone and not just our church family,” said Rev. Pollard, “The public is invited and encouraged to attend. It will be a good program and there will be good fellowship.”
