In recognition of a local chess prodigy who has advanced quickly and now qualifies to represent the United States in the World Youth Championship, the Logan Lions Club held a fundraiser to help with travel expenses to the tournament, which is to be held in the United Arab Emirates.
Advait “Adi” Patel has competed in and won several chess tournaments and is the 2012 US Junior Division VII Champion, US Junior Division VII Blitz Champion, the 2012 WV Action and Junior State Champion, and the 2012 National Elementary champion. He was also named as a member of the 2013 Team USA in 2012.
Recently,he placed second in the Super Nationals, which were held in Nashville, Tenn. The tournament had 5,300 participants and is the largest tournament in world chess history. He also placed third in the National Blitz [speed chess], an event with about 700 competitors.
The dinner featured Indian cuisine and was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Logan.
More than 50 people attended the dinner, and raised $1,500. To support Adi as he travels to represent Logan, and the U.S., contact any member of the Logan Lion’s Club.
