Heading into Wednesday night’s play in the Class A state tournament, the Man High School softball team was facing elimination.
The Lady Billies lost a 3-2 heartbreaker to Moorefield on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the double-elimination tournament at Jackson Memorial Park in Vienna.
Man (20-6) was scheduled to play Wheeling Central (21-9) in the loser’s bracket on Wednesday evening. No. 1-ranked and two-time defending Class A state champion Buffalo advanced with a 1-0 win over Wheeling Central in Game 1. Buffalo (32-4) was scheduled to face Moorefield (27-3) in the winner’s bracket.
The Lady Billies led Moorefield 2-1 but gave up two runs in the last half of the seventh inning as the Yellow Jackets moved on.
Jamie Fraley led of the seventh with a walk off Man senior starter Taylor Tomblin.
After a groundout to short, shortstop Beth Cook then delivered a game-tying RBI single to shortstop to make it 2-2.
Michaela Register was safe on a Man error and Brooke Riggleman then followed with a walk-off, game-winning RBI single to lift Moorefield to victory.
Tomblin pitched 6.1 innings and gave up three runs and seven hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.
Man led 1-0 in the top of the second as Cari Blair walked and scored on Tomblin’s RBI double down the right field line.
The Yellow Jackets then tied it 1-1 in the bottom of the third as Fraley doubled and scored on Cook’s RBI single to center. Cook, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI, came into the state tourney with a .625 batting average.
The Lady Billies went back on top 2-1 in the top of the sixth as Summer Sword singled and scored on Blair’s RBI single.
Kelly Grimmett added a bunt single for Man. Blair was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Casey Albright also had a single.
Danica Rogers was the starting and winning pitcher for Moorefield. She hurled a complete game as she allowed two runs and six hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Riggleman was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Yellow Jackets. Katelynn Wills and McKenzie Weese added hits for Moorefield.
Man was making its first trip to the state tournament since 2010 when it was the runner-ups to South Harrison.

The Man High School softball team saw its season come to a close with Wednesday evening’s 5-2 loss to Wheeling Central in the Class A state tournament in Vienna.
Man finished 0-2 in the double-elimination state tourney and 20-7 overall on the season.
Wheeling Central (22-9) moved on to the second day of the state tourney where the Maroon Knights are slated to take on either Buffalo or Moorefield on Thursday morning.
Tied 2-2, Wheeling Central plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning off Man pitcher Taylor Tomblin to grab a 5-2 lead. Cassidy McCord had a two-run double during the frame.
Man made some noise in the bottom of the seventh off Wheeling Central pitcher Sarah Henry as the Lady Billies loaded the bases after a Kelly Grimmett single and a pair of errors. Henry, though, got Tomblin to pop out to end the game.
Man tied it 1-1 in the second with Emilee Osborne’s RBI single. Grimmett then put Man ahead 2-1 with an RBI single of her own.
Wheeling Central tied it 2-2 with a run in the top of the third.
