June is normally a down period in the world of high school athletics in Logan County.
School is out.
The state softball, baseball and tennis tournaments are over.
The state track and field meet is in the books.
But June is the month for summer sports camps and the three-week summer practice period for high school teams.
At least four summer sports camps are on tap in June — two basketball camps, a soccer camp and a track and field camp.
It all begins June 3-5 as the Chapmanville Track Camp is scheduled to take past at Chapmanville’s Tiger Stadium.
Boys and girls in grades two through eight are eligible for track camp participation. Campers must be at least 7-years-old. The cost is $25 per camper (pre-registration). An additional $5 will be charged the day of the camp.
The time of the camp is 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. A snack will be provided.
There will be one-on-one coaching and introduction to the sport of track and field as well as tips in nutrition and stretching. There will be a mini meet on the third day of the camp.
Each camper will receive a T-shirt. For more information call Chapmanville track coach Joetta Thompson at 304-752-5862.
* Chapmanville Middle School will also be hosting a girls’ basketball camp June 10-12 at the Chapmanville Middle School gym from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day.
The ages are 5-13 and the cost is $40 per camper. Camp forms can be picked up the elementary schools and CMS. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Each camper will also received a T-shirt and a camp basketball. For more information call Tommy Kirk at 784-2870 855-8378.
* Logan High School and boys’ basketball coach Mark Hatcher is scheduled to host the annual AquaFina Runnin’ Wildcat Basketball Camp June 12-14 at Logan’s Willie Akers Arena.
This year’s camp, sponsored by Pepsi, Family Discount Pharmacy and WVOW, is scheduled to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day at the field house.
The camp is for boys and girls ages 4-14 years old. The price is $50 per camper. There are discounts for siblings. Registration is Wednesday, June 12 from 8:30-9:15 a.m.
Each camper will receive a T-shirt and trophy.
* If you want a taste of European soccer, the Coalfield Youth Soccer League of Logan County has teamed up to host the weeklong British Soccer Camp June 17-21 at the Mullins Sports Complex on Sawmill Road in Chapmanville.
The camp will be conducted by members of challenger’s British coaching staff flown to the USA exclusively to work on these programs.
The ages for the camp are 4-5, 6-9 and 10-16. The 4-5 camp is 9-10:30 a.m. and the cost is $92. The age 6-9 camp is 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the cost is $115. The 10-16 camp is 1-4 p.m. and the cost is $115.
Teams are also welcome to attend and receive a week of focused instruction to prepare them for the fall season.
Each camper will receive a free camp T-shirt, soccer ball, giant soccer poster and will have an individual skills performance evaluation. Space is limited.
Parents are encouraged to sign up on line in advance. To sign up for the camp visit the website: www.challengersports.com or contact Jennifer Trump at 304-784-6970 or visit the Facebook site at www.facebook.com/coalfieldyouthsoccer.
