W.Va. young volunteers competition open

September 8, 2013

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Applications are being accepted for an award to determine the state’s top young volunteers.

Students in grades five through 12 who’ve made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service can apply for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards until Nov. 5.

The awards were established in 1995 to recognize students for helping people in need, promoting health and safety, protecting the environment or volunteering in other ways.

Local winners will be selected in early November.

Two state winners will then be selected. They’ll receive $1,000 and a trip next May to Washington, D.C., where national winners will be announced.

Applications are available at http://spirit.prudential.com and www.nassp.org/spirit .
