MAN — The Van Bulldogs spoiled the home opener for the Man Middle School football team with last Thursday night’s 27-8 victory over the Pioneers at Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Field.
Man fell to 1-1 on the season and have an open date next week.
The Bulldogs scored 20 unanswered points and never looked back in posting the victory.
Brady Grant had a 52-yard touchdown catch on Van’s first play from scrimmage as the Bulldogs led 6-0.
The Dogs pushed their lead to 12-0 with just 43 seconds remaining in the first period on a 10-yard run by Drew Price. The two-point conversion failed.
Then just 13 seconds later Taylor Jarrell picked off Pioneers’ QB Zack Cook’s pass and raced in for a 50-yard TD score to give the Bulldogs a 20-0 lead after Price scored on the two-point conversion run with just 30 ticks on the first quarter clock.
The Pioneers scored just before the first half on a 17-yard pass from Cook to Hunter Epperhart. Cook then ran in the two-point conversion to make it a 20-8 game with just 24 seconds to play in the first half.
Man then took the opening kickoff in the second half and marched to the Van 30-yard line before the Bulldogs’ defense held the Pioneers on downs at the 2:44 mark.
Van would later get the final score of the game in the fourth period of play on an electrifying 75-yard TD run by Brady Grant. Brandon Moore booted the PAT to make it 27-8 with 5:20 left in the game.
“We just took a whipping tonight,” Man Middle School coach Tootie Carter said. “They were much more physical out there and we got banged up pretty good. It’s a good thing we have a week off to heal up.”
After next week’s bye week, Man returns to play Oceana on Sept. 26.
