The Tug Valley Panthers will renew their rivalry with the Tolsia Rebels as they travel north on U.S. 52 for a road game Friday night.
Coach Tony Clusky’s team will take on a team coached by former Panthers coach Mike Smith.
Tug Valley heads into this week’s game ranked No. 18 in Class 1A. They have a 2-2 record. The only defeats came at the hands of No. 8 ranked Meadow Bridge and last week the Panthers lost a tough game at Haysi, Va.
“This is a big game for both teams, and it should be a good atmosphere for high school football,” said TVHS head coach Tony Clusky.
“You always need to bounce back after a loss, but we got beat by a very good Haysi team,” Clusky added. “No doubt that is the best team we have played since I have been here at Tug Valley. We will play hard and do the best that we can this week. We can’t worry about other teams right now because we have to take care of our own team first.”
“The players are working hard at just getting better each day as we step on the football field,” Clusky concluded. “That’s all I can ask for.”
Tolsia comes into the game 1-3, but played county rival Wayne tough in their opener and only lost to Mingo Central by one point, 20-19, in the second week of the season.
Two weeks ago the Rebels lost to 2nd ranked Sissonville 56-0 and they won their first game in week four against Herbert Hoover by a score of 24-20.
Sophomore fullback Phillip Lucas has 54 carries for 310 yards for 5.7 yards per carry average to lead the Panthers. Senior running back David Runyon has 269 yards on 63 carries and a pair of TDs. He is averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Conley has 48 carries for 69 yards and three TDs.
In the receiving department, Runyon has 11 receptions for 137 yards and one TD,
Aaron Copley has five receptions for 108 yards and one TD, while Austin Baisden has two TD receptions.
Conley is 26-for-51 (51.0 completion percentage) for 338 yards, 4 TDs and no interceptions.
Conley leads the team with 18 tackles, while Lucas and Runyon each have 15.
Kickoff at Rebel Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game is aired on the Fort Gay radio station WFGH 90.7 FM, which can be picked up on-line.
