October 2, 2013

All three of Logan County’s high school football teams are rated in the top 16 this week in their respective classes.

Man (3-1), despite an off week last week, rose from eighth to fifth in the new ratings which were released on Tuesday afternoon by the WVSSAC.

Logan (4-1), a 27-14 winner last week at rival Chapmanville, rose from 18th to 12th this week in 3A, while the CRHS Tigers (3-2) dropped from 10th to 13th in the Class AA ratings.

The top 16 teams in each class qualify for the state playoffs which begin Nov. 15 across the state. The top eight teams will get homefield advantage for first-round games.

Williamstown (4-0) is this week’s No. 1-ranked team in the state in Class A with 9.50 points. Second place is St. Marys (4-0) with 9.00 ratings points. Weirton Madonna (4-0) is third. Clarksburg Notre Dame (4-0) is fourth, while Man, East Hardy (4-0), Moorefield (4-1) and Valley Fayette (4-0) are in a four-way tie for fifth place.

Meadow Bridge (5-0) is ninth, Wheeling Central (4-1) 10th, Clay-Battelle (4-0) 11th, Tucker County (4-1) 12th, Greenbrier West (4-1) 13th, Wahama (4-1) 14th and Doddridge County (4-1) and Parkersburg Catholic (4-1) are tied for 15th. Bishop Donahue (3-2) and Gilmer County (3-2) are tied for 17th. Tug Valley (2-3) is 19th.

In this week’s Class AAA ratings, Huntington (5-0) sits on top with 14.40 points. Capital (4-0), Wheeling Park (4-0) and George Washington (4-0) are tied for second with 13.50 points. Point Pleasant (4-0) is fifth, Oak Hill (4-0) sixth, Martinsburg (4-1) seventh, Cabell Midland (4-1) eighth, University (4-1) ninth and Hampshire (3-1) 10th.

Morgantown (4-1) is 11th in 3A, followed by 12th-place Hedgesville (3-1), 13th-place Logan, 14th-place Lewis County (3-1), 15th-place South Charleston (3-2) and 16th-place Jefferson (3-2).

In the Class AA ratings, Fairmont (4-0) is No. 1 with 11.50 points. Summers County (5-0) is second at 10.40, while two-time defending state champion Wayne (4-0) is third with 10.00 points. Frankfort (4-0) is fourth and Bridgeport (4-1) fifth. Sissonville (4-1) is sixth, Bluefield (3-1) seventh, Ritchie County (4-1) and Wyoming East (4-1) are tied for eighth and Lincoln (4-1) is 10th.

The Mingo Central Miners (3-1) are 11th, River View (3-1) is 12th, Chapmanville and Robert C. Byrd (3-2) are tied for 13th and Keyser (3-2) and Nicholas County (3-2) are tied for 15th.

Four of the top 16 teams in Double-A — Wayne, Sissonville, Mingo Central and Chapmanville — are members of the Cardinal Conference.

If the season ended today, Man would open up a first-round home playoff game at home against either Tucker County, Greenbrier West, Wahama or Doddridge County.

Logan would open the first round playoffs at Point Pleasant and Chapmanville would travel to either Frankfort or Wayne.

Logan observes a bye week this week. Man goes to Fayetteville, while Chapmanville hosts James Monroe.
