BELFRY, Ky. - The Belfry Middle School girls’ basketball team picked up a huge 32-26 victory over Dorton Middle School Monday night at the BMS gym.
Going into last night’s game Dorton Middle had won 88 of their last 89 games including a middle school state championship along with two Queen of the Mountain tournaments and several AAU tournaments.
Belfry came into the game at 12-1 and touted as one of the teams that had the talent to knock off this very good Dorton team. Needless to say both teams came in expecting a hard fought game and that’s exactly what it was.
Belfry was led offensively by Lena Hairston with 13 points. She was followed by Lyndsey Miller with 8 points, while Ariel Mounts and Hannah Bailey each had 4 points.
Defensively BMS was led by Hairston with 4 steals and Kailee Rash with 3 steals. On the boards Belfry was paced by Bailey with 10 rebounds, Rash followed with 6 boards, while Hairston and Taylor Maynard both picked up 5 rebounds each.
“This was a huge win for our program and our girls. Dorton is an outstanding team that is very well coached and we were able to come in here tonight and execute our game plan to perfection and pick up a huge win.” replied Coach Erik Rash. “Hairston had a huge game tonight. Her ball skills and speed is something teams don’t see at the middle school level and she was able to handle their pressure and make plays tonight.”
“Dorton wasn’t going to let Kailee Rash get any open looks tonight. They were face guarding her most the night and I knew offensively that Hairston was going to be able to beat people off the dribble and create opportunities for her and others. That’s exactly what she did and all the girls around her stepped up and played great tonight,” explained Rash. “
“Miller was huge on both ends tonight in the paint. She was able to match the play of Dolton’s very talented big girl, “said Rash.
Coach Rash also stated that the play of Hannah Bailey was very courageous.
“Hannah has been out since the first game of the year with a torn ACL and she recently got her knee brace and asked me if it was okay for her to dress and be a captain for this game. I never expected to play her and early foul trouble forced me into a tough situation. I asked her if she could go and she said I’ll try. Not only did she play but she played a lot and she played well. She had 10 rebounds and 4 points and she gave our team a big boost tonight.” stated Rash.
“Our big girls: Rash, Miller, Maynard and Bailey executed our offense and defensive game plan to perfection tonight. Our guard play from Hairston, Deaton and Mounts was outstanding on both ends all night. It was just a total team effort. I am so happy for my girls,” said Rash.
Belfry’s 7th grade dropped to 12-2 on the season with a 23-7 loss.
Scoring: Hairston 13, Miller 8, Mounts 4, Bailey 4, Maynard 2 and Rash 1.
