Billies whip Montcalm; Tigers win at Civic Center

MONTCALM — The Man High School boys’ basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young season with an 81-51 road win on Friday night at Montcalm.

Sophomore John Thomas Keffer led the way with 23 points for Man. He also had eight steals, seven rebounds and six assists.

Freshman Daniel Buchannon tossed in 16 points for the Billies.

The Hillbillies had four players in double digits in scoring as senior Cayce Mullins and sophomore Jake Adkins had 10 points each in the victory.

“I thought we played well, especially on defense. We forced them into 39 turnovers and we had 30 steals,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “We played hard and our offense played well. It was a good effort and a big win for us.”

The Billies jumped out to an early 12-8 lead mid-way in the first period.

Cayce Mullins hit a shot in the paint at the 2:26 mark to give Man a 16-8 advantage.

Keffer and Buchannon added field goals as the Billies took a 22-10 lead after the first quarter of play and never looked back.

Man built its lead to 25-10 to open the second stanza on a jumper in the lane by Gabby Brown at the 6:37 mark.

The Generals’ Jacob Howard hit two free throws and a runner in the lane to cut the Man deficit to 25-14 with 5:57 to play in the first half.

The Billies then went on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 20-point lead at 34-14 as Keffer got hot and hit two field goals and a 3-pointer and Cayce Mullins added a bucket in the paint for the 20-point lead with 4:11 to play.

Man got a 3-ball off the bench by Erik Files and a free throw as the Billies would take a 45-21 cushion into the locker room.

The Billies came out with their pressure defense and cashed the steals into easy baskets and took a 30-point lead at the 5:42 mark on two fast break steals and baskets by Kenny Joe Adkins and two inside-the-lane baskets by Buchannon and a jumper by Jake Adkins to all but put the game away.

Cayce Mullins and Brown had buckets late in the third stanza to give Man a 65-39 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Buchannon then hit two free throws to give Man a 67-44 lead with 5:49 on the clock.

The Billies then went on a 9-0 run again to push the lopsided lead to 31 points at 76-45 and ice the game with just 3:34 to play. Brown and Jake Adkins both drained two free throws while Mullins added a charity toss and Kenny Joe Adkins scored on a fast break layup off the glass.

Coach Arms then went to his bench and brought in the reserves for the remainder of the game as the Billies won by 30 and went to 2-0.

Kenny Joe Adkins added eight points for Man. Brown had seven, Files four and Gage Harvey three. The Billies were just 16-for-32 from the free throw line for 50 percent.

Montcalm was paced by Tyler Goins who had 15 points. Josh Hamblin had 12 and Jacob Howard nine. The Generals were 13-for-23 from the charity stripe.

Man won the battle of the boards 38-30 over Montcalm. The Generals were forced into a whopping 39 turnovers. Man had 30 steals for the game.

Man is scheduled to return to action on Friday, Dec. 27 with a game against Class AAA Riverside in Chapmanville Regional High School’s Bob Runyon Memorial Holiday Tournament. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.

The Billies will then return to play in the Chapmanville tourney on Saturday, Dec. 28 against either Mount View or Chapmanville in the championship game or the consolation game. Chapmanville and Mount View are slated to meet on Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the nightcap.

Chapmanville 72,

North Marion 43

CHARLESTON — The Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with Saturday afternoon’s 72-43 win over North Marion in the Big 10/Cardinal Conference Challenge at the Charleston Civic Center.

The game was part of the annual Hoops Classic.

North Marion dropped to 3-1.

Chapmanville dominated the game, outscoring the Huskies 23-6 after one quarter, 37-19 at the half and 53-33 after three. The Tigers then outpointed North Marion 19-10 in the fourth.

It was the first game for Chapmanville on the Civic Center floor since Dec. 16, 2005 when the Tigers lost 58-56 in the Hoops Classic to Pikeview. Chapmanville beat Roane County 59-58 the year before in the Hoops Classic at Charleston and also played in the Hoops Classic in 2003, falling 90-60 to Sissonville.

Chapmanville jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter and upped the margin to 16-5 after a 3-pointer by Joe Tackett. A 3 by Josh Butcher at the buzzer then put the Tigers on top 23-6 after one.

CRHS led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter.

Chapmanville was led by senior Brady Cox with 20 points. Butcher also had a good game, finishing with 19 points. Tackett also reached double digits in scoring with 14 points. Kenny Plumley had eight, while Jon Williamson and Casto tallied four each. Jordan Toler finished with three points.

The Tigers return to action on Monday at home against Class AAA Lincoln County. The Panthers are 0-4 after losing 82-44 at Scott on Friday night.

Chapmanville then hosts its annual holiday tourney on Dec. 27-28.
