Since the ball has dropped in Times Square and the calendar has flipped over to 2014, it’s back to the hardwood for Logan County’s six boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams after a brief break.
A big weekend slate of games is on tap.
Heading the list is Friday night’s boys’ game between the rival Chapmanville and Scott high school basketball teams. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Chapmanville Regional High School’s Danny Godby Gymnasium.
Chapmanville, coached by Allan Hatcher, comes into the contest with a 5-1 mark.
The Tigers split in their holiday tournament after Christmas, losing to Class AAA Riverside, 72-69 in overtime in the championship game. CRHS had routed Mount View 62-33 in the first round of the tourney.
Scott, a Class AA sectional rival and Cardinal Conference team, enters with a 5-2 mark overall and 3-0 record in the league. The Tigers are 1-0 in Cardinal games, an early season victory over Herbert Hoover.
The Skyhawks lost 82-59 on Dec. 28 at Bluefield in their last action.
Also on Friday night, the Logan High School girls (4-3) host South Charleston at 7:30 p.m. before hosting Morgantown (6-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in another marquee game between two of the state’s top 10 Class AAA teams.
The Lady Cats last played on Monday, winning 53-36 at county rival Chapmanville.
Also on Friday night, the Man boys (3-1) host Greater Beckley Christian in a 7:30 p.m. tip time at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse. The Hillbillies beat Mount View 55-50 in the Chapmanville tourney consolation game.
Then on Saturday night, the Logan boys (2-3) host Nitro (0-5). The Wildcats are off to a slow start to the season and lost 68-48 at home to George Washington in its most recent action.
