Billies stumble late, fall to GBC

MAN — The Man High School boys’ basketball team held a slim one-point lead heading into the final eight minutes of play against Greater Beckley Christian on Friday night but could not hold on as the Crusaders won 75-61 over the Hillbillies at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

Man fell to 3-2 on the season with the loss and travel to Sherman on Tuesday night.

Elisha Kidd led GBC with 22 points and Javoine Bailey added 21.

Man was led by sophomore Jake Adkins, who had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and John Thomas Keffer, another sophomore, who got game high scoring honors with 17.

“We played hard, but when it got down to the end there in the fourth quarter they made the plays and we didn’t make them,” Man coach Harvey Arms said. “Turnovers there at the end killed us, plus we got into foul trouble.”

Beckley Christian had 37 foul shots and made 24 to Man’s 10-for-12 charity tosses for the game.

The Crusaders also drained seven 3-pointers with Bret Daniels making three of those.

Greater Beckley Christain jumped out to an early 11-4 lead on two 3-point goals by Daniels with 4:33 on the opening period clock.

Keffer followed with two quick field goals to cut the deficit to 16-10 at the 2:16 mark.

Kidd later scored on a fast break layup off the glass to make it 18-10 with 1:43 to go.

Keffer hit a 3-ball late, trimming the Beckley Christian lead to 18-13 as the first quarter came to a end.

The Billies battled back and took the lead after a basket by Erik Files and a trey by Jake Adkins to give MHS a 20-19 advantage with 5:33 on the second period clock.

Freshman Daniel Buchanon then hit two key baskets in the paint to push the Billies’ lead to 24-19 with 3:30 to play.

Jake Adkins hit a 12-foot jumper with just 10 seconds to play as Man would take a slim 31-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Both teams played even in the third stanza at 19-19.

Greater Beckley came out and took the lead back at 38-33 on a tear drop shot by Kidd with 6:01 to play.

Sophomore Kenny Joe Adkins scored a three-point play to cut the deficit to 38-37 and Buchanon then hit a shot to give the Billies the lead back at 39-38 at the 3:52 mark.

Keffer hit one of two free throws with 25 seconds left, giving MHS a four-point lead at 50-46 but Francis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the Man lead to 50-49 heading into the final eight mintues of play.

GBC came out and went on a 11-2 run to take the lead for good at 60-51 at the 5:23 mark.

The Crusaders pushed the lead to 62-52 on an offensive stickback by Joseph Cornett with 4:19 to play in the game. Keffer then hit a behind-the-arc 3 to make it 62- 55 with 4:06 remaining.

Francis hit two free throws and Bailey scored on a steal and fast break layup to push the Greater Beckley Christian lead back to 66-55 with just 2:52 to play. Beckley then hit its free throws in the final two minutes of play to come away with the 75-61 victory.

Cayce Mullins and Kenny Joe Adkins added 12 points each for Man. Buchanon added six points, while Files had four.

Francis added 15 points for GBC. Daniels finished with 11.
