CHAPMANVILLE — The Chapmanville Regional High School boys’ basketball team improved to 7-1 on the season with a 58-47 win at home over county rival Man at Chapmanville’s Danny Godby Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
It was an ugly game as the Hillbillies played the Tigers tough and trailed by only three points after the first quarter and by just two at the half.
The third period would be the difference as the Tigers’ defense held the Hillbillies to just four points.
Man dropped to 4-4 with the loss.
Josh Butcher led Chapmanville’s scoring attack with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Brady Cox also reached double digits with 14 points on the night.
John Thomas Keffer got game-high scoring honors for Man with 20 points. Jake Adkins chipped in with 12 points in the losing cause.
The Tigers led 20-13 after one quarter and 33-31 at the break as Man outscored Chapmanville 18-13 in the second period. The Tigers’ 13-4 third quarter then put Chapmanville on top 46-35 after three. Both teams netted 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Kenny Plumley added nine points for Chapmanville. Joe Tackett and Zac Casto tallied five each, while Trey Dalton and Jon Willamson pitched in three points apiece.
Joey Buchanon tallied eight points for Man. Cayce Mullins had four and Kenny Joe Adkins three.
The Tigers led by three points at the half but Man’s Keffer cut it to 36-35 to open the second half after hitting a jumper.
Butcher then hit a 3-pointer to give Chapmanville a 39-34 advantage at the 3:35 mark.
The Tigers extended the lead to 42-34 on yet another 3-ball by Butcher with 1:47 to play in the third period.
Cox then drained two free throws to give the Tigers a nine-point lead at 44-35. Tackett then scored on a fast break layup to put CRHS up by 11 points at 46-35 at the end of the third quarter as the Tigers’ pressure defense allowed the Billies just four points in the period.
Butcher got things started in the final eight minutes of play, hitting another 3-pointer to expand the Chapmanville lead to 14 points at 49-35.
Keffer then hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 49-38.
Plumley’s layup then made it 51-40 at the five-minute mark.
Cox then got loose for a layup off the glass to give CRHS a 54-40 advantage at the 4:31 mark.
Jake Adkins then hit a 3-pointer for the Billies to make it 54-43 with just 2:59 to play.
Keffer then hit two free throws to make it 54-45.
The Tigers sealed the game in the final two minutes of play, converting on their free throws as the Billies had to foul.
Butcher hit 2-of-2 free throws and Casto hit two more charity tosses as the Tigers went on for the hard fought 58-47 win.
Chapmanville was just 20-for-53 shooting from the floor for 37.7 percent. The Tigers were 7-for-23 in the second half for only 30.4 percent.
Man was 15-for-48 shooting for the game for an ice-cold 31.3 percent.
The Tigers made 11-of-20 free throws for 55 percent. The Billies sank 12-of-17 foul shots for 70.6 percent.
Buchanon pulled down 11 rebounds for Man. Cox had 14.
Chapmanville was scheduled to play at Mingo Central on Wednesday night at 7:30. The Tigers host Sissonville on Saturday night in another 7:30 p.m. tip.
Man hosts Montcalm on Friday night at 7:30 and then is slated to take on Wesley Christian (Ky.) on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at the Williamson Fieldhouse.
