The snowy weather in southern West Virginia not only has closed school for Logan, Mingo and surrounding counties for days.
It has also caused a major pause in the area high school basketball schedules.
Several games have been wiped out due to the wintry weather, which has dumped up to six inches of snow in the area and has closed schools and caused slippery road conditions.
School was cancelled in Logan and Mingo counties Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and no games were played. School was out on Monday due to the Martin Luther King Holiday. School was last in session last Friday.
Most area teams haven’t played since last weekend.
Logan High School’s girls, ranked No. 7 in the state in Class AAA, got a game in on Monday before the snowstorm hit as the Lady Cats improved to 9-4 with a 74-60 victory at Winfield. The Logan girls were slated to play at Westside on Wednesday but the game was postponed to Thursday night when the two were going to try and make a second attempt. Logan is slated to host Tolsia next Tuesday night.
The Logan boys (4-6) made two attempts to play at Tug Valley this week and both games were called off. No makeup date has been announced. Logan is scheduled to host Greater Beckley Christian on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Willie Akers. It will be 1964 Night as Logan’s ‘64 state championship team and former head coach Willie Akers will be honored on the 50th-anniversary of the title.
The Chapmanville Regional High School girls (9-4) was slated to host Wayne on Thursday night but that game was in doubt as of presstime. The Lady Tigers won at home on Monday night over Sherman 70-36. CRHS is scheduled to play at Herbert Hoover on Friday night and then go to Sherman next Tuesday night.
The Chapmanville boys (9-4) had its game on Wednesday night at Lincoln County postponed. No makeup date has been announced. The Tigers last played on Saturday night and won 69-54 at home over Sissonville in Cardinal Conference action. Chapmanville is scheduled to play at Wayne on Friday night before hosting Herbert Hoover next Tuesday night.
The Man High School boys’ basketball team (5-5) last played on Saturday, falling 82-58 to Wesley Christian (Ky.) in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout at Williamson. The Hillbillies’ game on Wednesday night at Tug Valley was called off and rescheduled for Jan. 29 at Naugatuck. Man is slated to host Greater Beckley Christian on Friday night.
The Man girls (4-8) had its game at Buffalo on Tuesday night cancelled. The Lady Billies last played on Monday night, losing 67-30 at home to Wyoming East. Man was scheduled to host Mount View on Thursday night. On Friday night, Man is set to go to Williamstown.
