Lady Billies close out with three straight wins

MAN — Man High School girls’ basketball coach Tonia Ward has to like the way the regular season has ended.

The Lady Billies won three games in a row to close out 9-11 ahead of this week’s Class A sectional tournament.

On Tuesday, Man went on a the road and beat Greater Beckley Christian 78-37.

Then on Wednesday, the Lady Billies made a 200-mile round trip to Buffalo to win 50-48 over the Bison.

On Thursday night, the Lady Billies returned home for Senior Night ans won 56-38 over River View.

Honored were Man’s two seniors — Morgan Conn and Tessa Mullins.

The Lady Billies were led by Conn and Mika McCoy who each tossed in 20 points. Hannah Harvey and Hunter Harvey followed with six points each. Haylee Daniels and Mullins tallied two each.

Class AA River View was paced by Katie Dobbs, who had 17 points. Rebecha Christain had eight points, Savannah Anglis and Kriestan Pauley had five each and Paige Cooper chipped in with two.

Man led 20-6 after one quarter, 31-9 at the half and 42-22 after three.

Man jumped out to an early 20-6 lead after the first quarter of play and never looked back.

Hannah Harvey hit a shot to push the Man lead to 24-6 with 5:39 on the second quarter clock. McCoy and Conn then hit baskets to push the Lady Billies to a commanding 29-8 advantage.

Man went on to take a 31-9 halftime lead.

Conn then hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and Hannah Harvey had a stickback basket to give MHS a 36-14 lead midway in the third stanza.

McCoy hit 4-of-4 free throws and a field goal to push the Lady Billies to a 42-22 lead heading into the final eight mintues of play.

Daniels, a freshman, hit a jumper to push the Man lead to 47-27 with 5:03 to play.

Conn then hit a floater and Mullins added two free throws as Man pushed the lead to 55-31 with 1:35 to play.

Ward then cleared the bench and put in her reserves as the Lady Billies went on to take a 56-38 victory.

Sectional tourney play starts this Monday. Man got a bye and will play on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Tug Valley-Montcalm game. Since the Man boys are playing Chapmanville on Tuesday at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse, the Lady Billies’ sectional game could be moved to the Man Middle School gym.

Tug Valley hosts Montcalm on Monday at 7 p.m. in the sectional opener. Van hosts Greater Beckley Christian at 7 p.m. the same night.

Sherman received the No. 1 seed and also got a bye. The Tide are slated to host the GBC-Van winner on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The two winners are set to meet on Friday at 7 p.m. at the home of the highest remaining seeds.

Man has split with its potential sectional foe Tug Valley this season, winning 52-46 at Naugatuck and falling 71-67 at home late in the season.
