“And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you.” (Matthew 17:20)
One day when Jesus and his disciples came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. The man asked Jesus to have mercy on his son. He had seizures and suffered greatly. He often fell into the fire or into the water. He had brought his son to Jesus’ disciples but they could not heal him.
Jesus said, “O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.” Jesus then rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.
The disciples then came to Jesus in private and asked why they could not cast the demon out of the boy. Jesus told them that they had so little faith. He then revealed to them that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed, they could say to the mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing would be impossible for them.” He also made known to them that this kind goes not out but by prayer and fasting. (vs. 21)
As we think about the disciples of Jesus it must have been very difficult for them at times. Jesus knew His time on earth was short, and He was confronted constantly by people ho needed His help both physically and spiritually. In chapter 9:35-38 when Jesus and his disciples were going through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness, He had compassion on the crowds, because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd. He shared with his disciples that the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. He encouraged them to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest field. This should be our prayer to God today. We are surrounded by those who are lost and need the savior.
May we offer up prayers to our Lord
That He will send witnesses to help spread His Word,
That workers will share the good news of the gospel,
As His truth does undergird.
May He help us to reach out to the lost,
Who need the Lord in their lives,
For whatever they can do will be blessed by Him,
And will be worth any sacrifice.
Dear Father, please help us to be bold in our witness, that many may come to a saving knowledge of your love. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
