McCONNELL — The AWANA (Approved Workers Are Not Ashamed) Program, taken from II Timothy 2:15 of the New Testament, is a special youth program for three-year olds through sixth graders. The First Baptist Church of McConnell AWANA Club will have a “kick-off” event Mon., Sept. 8, at 6 p.m.
AWANA is a national program that enhances the spiritual life of children. AWANA meetings are divided into three 30 minute rotating sessions. During the meeting there is a time for Bible story, counseling, and handbook, and AWANA floor game events. Children learn the Word of God in an exciting and fun atmosphere. As children finish their handbooks, memory work, and application assignments they are issued rewards and badges.
At the end of the AWANA year, children are given AWANA “bucks” (play money) that they have earned to spend on toys and games at the AWANA Store Event.
Throughout the year there are competitions with other AWANA Clubs in the areas of Bible quiz, soap box derby, and AWANA Olympics.
The First Baptist Church of McConnell conducts AWANA Club Meetings at 6 p.m. Mondays through the school year. All children around the Logan area are welcome to attend. The church’s vans run through the Logan area for pick-up to the meeting.
If your church does not have a youth program for children, we invite you to bring them to the Monday evening AWANA event.
“The AWANA Program spiritually safeguards youth with the Word of God, Pastor John E. Godby said. “It prepares them to make positive decisions when confronted with involvement in tobacco use, drug and alcohol abuse, and many other unwholesome social issues of our society.” Interested parents are encouraged to attend and assist the staff. The McConnell AWANA quiz team was first in the state in 2012.
For more information about AWANA Club, call Judy Turner (AWANA Commander) at 304-855-7083 or Godby at 304-752-7774.
“The First Baptist Church of McConnell has a motto ‘Dedicated to Saving the Youth of Logan County,’” Godby said. “AWANA is part of that challenge.”
