It was a ferocious comeback by the Logan High School boys’ basketball team on Tuesday night in its Senior Night game with Parkersburg at Logan’ Willie Akers Arena.

The Wildcats trailed the Big Reds by as many as 17 points but ran out of time at the end as Parkersburg came out on top 75-72 over Logan, handing the Wildcats their fifth straight loss.

Logan (13-8) is in a tailspin heading into Thursday night’s regular season finale at Capital and next Wednesday night’s Class AAA sectional tournament at Cabell Midland.

It looked like the Wildcats might get blown out last night as the Big Reds led 26-9 early in the second quarter.

Logan, though, clawed its way back into the game.

The Wildcats trailed by nine after three quarters, 54-45, and made it interesting at the end.

Logan eventually cut Parkersburg’s lead to 72-68 with 41 seconds left after senior Keaton Johnson nailed a 3-pointer.

The Big Reds, which improved to 16-6 on the season, then missed two key free throws with 34.7 seconds to go as Devin Hoehn clanged a pair off the rim.

The Wildcats took advantage of the bricks and quickly dribbled down to the other side of the floor as senior Stevie Browning followed his own miss and scored on a putback underneath the basket to make it a 72-70 ballgame with 23 seconds remaining in the game.

Parkersburg’s Dax Mennillo was then hacked with 20 ticks left and hit both free throws to up the margin to 74-70.

Logan still had a chance but C.J. Williams missed an open bunny in the lane with 13 seconds left and Parkersburg’s Jeremy Bell was fouled with 11.5 ticks showing on the clock. Bell split from the free throw line to seal the win. Browning then scored a bucket as time expired.

Browning led Logan with 29 points. Matthew Greene also celebrated Senior Night as the 12th-grader hit two 3s and finished with 14 points. Johnson canned three 3s and finished with 13, while sophomore guard Da’jon Streeter also reached double digits with 10 points.

A.J. Reynolds and Williams added three each.

Parkersburg was paced by Hoehn, who connected on three treys and finished with 25 points. Alex Ash and Bell contributed 14 and 13 points respectively.

The Big Reds were 18-for-27 from the free throw line, while the Cats were true on 8-of-13.

Parkersburg jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter, forcing Logan coach Mark Hatcher to call timeout.

Leading 18-7 after one the Big Reds expanded their lead to 26-7 with an 8-2 run, thanks to back-to-back makes from 3-point land.

The Wildcats then countered with a 9-0 run, capped off by Johnson’s 3-pointer, to trim the deficit to 26-18 with 4:26 left until the half.

Logan trailed 35-22 at the break and then tried to cut into Parkersburg’s lead in the third quarter.

Streeter’s 3 sliced the Big Red advantage to 36-29 with 6:07 to go but PHS would move the lead to 44-33 with Chad Newell’s trey from the corner.

Greene later hit a 3-ball to make it 46-38 with 2:23 left in the third. Reynolds also drilled a 3 to make it a 50-41 ballgame.

The Big Reds were then able to hold on for the win.

Greene and Browning were the co-winners of this year’s Willie Akers Scholarship Award during the pre-game festivities.

Seniors Joe Street, Marc Morris, Nigel Wallace, Matt Southers and Trevor Andrews were also honored prior to tip off. Andrews was ruled ineligible to play this season by the WVSSAC.
