MAN — The Man High School football team expects a close battle with Fayetteville in Friday night’s rematch.
The No. 2 Billies (10-1) and No. 7 Pirates (9-2) meet in the quarterfinals of the Class A playoffs at Man’s George A. Queen Memorial Field.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The winner moves on to play No. 3 Richwood or No. 6 Wirt County in the state semifinals which are set for Nov. 27-28.
Man and Fayetteville played this season with the Billies coming out on top, 23-7, on Oct. 2 at Fayetteville.
Man advanced with a 25-20 opening-round victory over Parkersburg Catholic last week. Fayetteville downed Wahama, 23-20, to move on.
“They’re a team that we’ve played now for several years,” Man coach Harvey Arms said of the Pirates. “Every game is a tough, physical game. They’ve got a good team and we know that this one will be a tough, physical game. The first game was a pretty close one. We don’t expect anything different this time.”
Arms said the Pirates use a good mix of run and pass.
“They mix well,” he said. “They have a good ground game, plus they can throw the ball fairly well. They have some seniors who are good players and who have been three-year starters. We see them year after year. They’ve got a good team.”
Arms said Man’s running attack must be able to continue to move the ball just as it has done all year. The Billies are led on the ground by running backs Brandon Plymale, Andrew Hale and brothers Michael and Derek Lomax.
“We’ve got to pretty much be able to do what we’ve done all year long,” Arms said. “We have to run the football because basically we’re pretty much a ground-oriented team. We’ve got to run the ball and control the time on the clock. We’ll also need to have a pass here and there when we need it. As always in these kinds of games, special teams will also be big.”
Fayetteville had to rally late to beat No. 10 Wahama in last week’s playoff game.
Wahama used a pair of 1-yard TD runs by Micaiah Branch to take a 20-16 lead and looked poised for the upset.
The Pirates, though, came right back as MichaelAngelo Hernandez fired a 16-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Hernandez with 6:28 left in the game. MichaelAngelo Hernandez then booted the PAT to put Fayetteville ahead 23-20. The Pirates then held on for the victory.
“These kids are tough when they have to be. When their backs are against the wall, they’re fighters. We finally got a little break and caught fire,” Fayetteville coach Frank Spangler told the Register Herald of Beckley after the win.
Fayetteville’s top rusher, Drew Weis, was limited to just 41 yards on the ground last week.
MichaelAngelo Hernandez was 7-of-13 for 171 yards and three scores, including two to his brother.
