LOGAN, W.Va. — The fourth period 5th grade Social Studies Class of Logan Middle School, directed by Mrs. Ashley Zornes-Lyall, has attacked the old saying “you can’t fight city hall.”

Several weeks ago, during a counselor’s developmental guidance lesson regarding making responsible personal decisions about smoking and using other harmful products, this particular class brought up their disapproval of a local store’s advertising use of a superhero look-a-like.

The lesson then took a twist toward community citizenship. The students brainstormed and came up with ideas on how to approach the situation. Some of them wrote letters respectfully asking for the discontinuance of the advertisement. Their letters brought about an immediate gracious response from the store and the advertisement was changed.

“When you hear anyone say that you can’t affect change in your life, community or even your country, tell them they are wrong,” Zornes-Lyall said. “My fifth grade 4th period class — of whom I am very proud — brought about change. They all want you to know that if you see something that needs changed, don’t just accept it, do something about it. My students want to thank those involved in this change.”
