The Share the Warmth with Savannah Coat Drive is gearing up for another year of collecting and distributing coats of all sizes to people in need across the area.

Nine-year-old Savannah Carpenter is in the fourth grade at West Chapmanville Elementary School.

Savannah has been working toward the goal of providing a coat to those in need for five years.

Melissa Fleming, Savannah’s mother, explained the conception of the coat drive came out of a ride to school in the winter of 2011.

Fleming noted she was taking a then four-year-old Savannah to preschool, and, on their way, they passed several children at a bus stop who did not have coats in the cold weather.

Fleming added, “Savannah wanted to know why they didn’t have coats on. I told her, ‘Probably because they don’t have a coat.’ Her response was, ‘Why don’t we get them one?’ It started by asking our friends and family. We gathered maybe 50 or so coats that year.”

The group reports they plan to distribute over 200 coats this year.

The Share the Warmth Coat Drive collects coats of all sizes; however, the group is currently in the greatest need of children’s coats.

Fleming explained, “The last thing we want to happen is…to have a kid who needs a coat and we don’t have that size or what they need.”

The coats need not be new; however, the group asks the coats be delivered clean and in gently used condition.

“We are asking people to go into their closets and give us the coats their kids don’t wear anymore,” noted Fleming.

The Share the Warmth Coat Drive has also partnered with several local business to help collect and distribute coats.

Anyone who wishing to donate a coat can do so at any of the businesses who are participating in the drive.

Atkins, D.D.S., in Madison, W.Va. and any area church or school.

Anyone who wishes to drop of their coat at Pickin’ in the Park will also be entered into a raffle to win two free tickets to the upcoming Southern Coalition for the ARTS productions of “Smoke on the Mountain: Sanders Family Christmas.”

Savannah will be distributing coats at the Chapmanville Christmas Parade Dec. 5 and the Corey Price Toy Drive on Dec. 19 and 20.
