VERDUNVILLE, W.Va. — The 16th Annual Mud Fork-Verdunville Reunion was held Aug. 13 at the Maryetta United Baptist Church.

The group meets during the second week of August each year.

Taylor Workman and Jean Maynard, each 86 years old, were the oldest people who attended the reunion, and Judy Badgley travelled the farthest from Lansing, Mich.

The theme for the reunion centered on the Island Creek Coal Company and the Holden Dairy which was located at Sulphur Springs in Holden, W.Va.

In the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, Sulphur Springs in Holden was a place where people sought enjoyment at the swimming hole.

A local artesian well produced sulphur laced water which was used by many for medicinal purposes.

The group reportedly had fun remembering the days of yesteryear, listening to local music provided by Raymond Conley and Roy Watkins, playing trivia and enjoying decorative centerpieces made by Shirley Baisden and Sandra Butcher.

The centerpieces featured bottles and pales labeled for the Holden Dairy, and door prizes at the event were “hillbilly flashlights” which boil down to being a match holder.

Baisden added the Island Creek Coal Company was remembered by many at the event as being one the greatest coal companies in the world.

“They took care of all our needs. We really had pretty communities. They took care of our garbage, sports facilities and the Holden swimming pool. We had lots of jobs for our men and women not only in the mines but as doctors, dentists, nurses, scouts and store clerks,” noted Baisden.

Those signing the guestbook from out of the area were: Gary and Gloria Wilson from Knoxville, Tenn.; Charles Ray Ellis and Judy E. Badgley, both of Lansing, Mich.; Mike and Lila Green from Beavercreek, Ohio; Glen and Rose Hampton of Canton, N.C.; Taylor Workman of Cleveland, Ohio; Navahlia Hanners of Lexington, N.C.; Betty G. Thompson of Huntington, W.Va.; Barbara Charles of Nashville, Tenn.; George Mullins of Barboursville, W.Va.; and Patty E. Exdci of Dewitt, Ind.

Others attending included Shirley M. Baisden; Jack Baisden; Tennis Baisden; John Baisden; Raymondy Conley; Bonnie M. Kovach; Brenda B. Frye; Jo Ann Johnson; Peggy W. Elkins; Noah Perry; Patty B. Browning; Foster Workman; Teresa Workman; Dixie V. Long; Dennis Baisden; Michael Colegrove; Danny and Linda Hall; Hester B. Hodges; Linda B. Bryant; Franklin Watkins; Roy Watkins; Debbie B.
