Celebrating Thanksgiving


Local students celebrate the holiday by sharing turkey recipes

MAN, W.Va. — The South Man Elementary Pre-K students of Mrs. Katharine Ellis and Mrs. Amy Toler celebrated Thanksgiving last week by making Native American headbands along with Pilgrim hats and vests. The students also enjoyed listening to several Thanksgiving stories and participated in various learning activities related to the first Thanksgiving.

The students were asked, “Where does your mommy buy her turkey?”, “How much does it cost?”, and “How does your mommy fix a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner?” The following are their replies.

Harper, age 5 — My daddy buys our turkey at the “Food Stuff” (Dollar Store). He pays $2 for the turkey. Daddy cooks the turkey in the oven for 5 minutes. He cooks it really hot on 25 degrees. Then he brings it out and we all eat. The bones are really gross. I make a funny face when I eat the bones. I really like turkey.

Cheyenne, age 4 — My mamaw buys a turkey at Foodland. She pays $5 for it. She makes me a cake. She puts it in the oven for 50 minutes. After she gets it out of the oven she puts the cake in. She bakes the cake for five minutes. She puts up decorations for Thanksgiving. Everybody comes to eat at mamaw MiMi’s house. When everybody gets done eating everybody leaves.

Maci, age 5 — My mommy and daddy gets the turkey at Walmart. They pay $4 for the turkey. My mom cooks the turkey in the stove for 4 hours at 13 degrees. She puts lettuce, peppers and salt on it. She puts it in a pan. Then, she take it out and our family eats it. Sometimes the cats get our food and they eat it.

Ashton, age 5 — My mommy gets our turkey in Huntington. You scan at the register and it cost $10. She puts some stuff on the turkey. I don’t know what it’s called. She puts it in the microwave for 10 minutes on 12 degrees. She lets it cool. She makes a sandwich and we eat after it gets cool.

Ethan, age 4 — My mommy gets the turkey at the grocery store. Pic Pac has food. She pays $45 for the turkey. She goes home and cooks it. She puts it in the oven. She cooks it for 4500 minutes on 45 degrees. She makes corndogs too. The corndogs only take 4 seconds to cook. They are really fast. We eat the turkey, then we go outside.

Taylin, age 4 — My mommy gets the turkey at Walmart. She pays $4 for it. My mommy puts the turkey in the oven. She leaves it in there for 5 minutes. She cooks it on 6 degrees. She takes it out. We eat corn and mashed potatoes too. She gives out our drinks. Then, we eat the turkey.

Matthew, age 4 — My mommy buys the turkey at Walmart. She pays $45 for the turkey. She goes back home. She cooks it on the stove. She cooks it for 5 minutes. She cooks it on 5 degrees. She don’t cook nothing else. She puts it on a pan. Then she puts it on a napkin. Then, we eat it.

Macy, age 4 — My daddy gets a turkey at the barn. It costs $10. My daddy cooks it for 3 minutes at 40 degrees in a pan. My daddy cooks soup and macaroni and cheese. He also cooks chicken and French fries. He uses water, sugar, and flour. He stirs it up. Then he puts more sugar on it and makes a cake. Then, we eat it.

Liam D., age 4 — My mommy buys her turkey at Walmart. It costs $1. She brings it home to cook it. She cooks it in the stove. She cooks it for an hour. She cooks it on 48 degrees. She puts it on a plate. Then, we eat it.

Logan, age 4 — My mommy gets her turkey at Walmart. She pays $1 for it. She takes it home and cooks it. She puts it in the microwave for 60 to 80 hours. She cooks it at 40 degrees. When she cooks it, “it burns”. She takes it out and we eat it.

Ian, age 4 — Josh buys our turkey. He buys the turkey up in the woods. He pays a lot for the turkey. He pays $1 for the turkey in the woods. He takes it home and cooks it. He cooks it for 3 hours. He cooks it on the stove. He cooks it superhot on 3 degrees. He don’t cook nothing else. Mommy makes pizza rolls. We sit down at our new table and our new chairs to eat. I got a Ninja Turtle chair.

Alysa, age 4 — My mommy gets her turkey at Walmart. She pays $1 for the turkey. My mom puts sugar and milk and flour on the turkey. She puts it in the oven to cook for 4 minutes. She puts the oven on 4 degrees to cook the turkey. She gets it out of the oven and puts it on a plate and we eat it. It is good.

Andria, age 4 — My mommy buys the turkey at the Dollar Tree. It costs $3 for the turkey. She cooks it in the oven. She puts sprinkles on it before she puts it in the oven. She puts different color sprinkles on it. It takes 6 hours to cook. She cooks it on 20 degrees. She cooks bread too. I play while it is cooking. When it’s done, mommy tells me and we eat the turkey.

Liam M., age 4 — Shawn buys the turkey at the “Chicken Store”. It is far, far away at Logan where Bumble Bee is. She pays $151 for it. We take it home. Shawn cooks it on the grill outside at the bank. She cooks it for 151 seconds. She cooks it on 50,000 degrees. Shawn makes peperoni pizza too. We eat the whole thing.

Leigha, age 5 — My mommy goes to Walmart. She buys the turkey at Walmart. She pays $6 for it. Mommy cooks the turkey in the stove for 4 minutes on 8 degrees. She makes mashed potatoes with it. Then we eat. I like Thanksgiving.

Baylee, age 5 — My mommy buys the turkey at Pic Pac. She pays $10 for the turkey. She takes it home and puts it on the stove. She cooks it for 10 minutes at 1 degree. She makes spaghetti and macaroni and cheese. She makes bread. She makes Handy Helper too. We sit down and eat. I sit outside and eat.
