With the mission of providing the people of the area with a health and resource fair while also providing them with fun and games, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), in conjunction with Step By Step WV, LEAD and AmeriCorps Vista, will host a three-on-three basketball tournament.
The tournament will be start at 9 a.m. Sept. 12 at the playground in Cora Alley and teams of three will battle throughout the day for a cash prize. Children will also be able to play carnival games at the event, and the Recovery Group of West Virginia will be on site to administer a concession stand.
Currently, the AFSC is searching for teams of three to enter the tournament, and donations are currently being accepted to fund the event and other local projects sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee.
During the basketball tournament, a health fair will be available to anyone who attends the event where, in order to educate people on the numbers and metrics associated with their health. healthcare workers will be available to measure blood pressure, blood sugar levels and weight.
A resource fair will also take place at the event and will feature representatives from groups throughout the area like Recovery Group of Southern West Virginia, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, NECCO, the WVU Extension Office and PRIDE.
