A mother and son were attacked by a neighbor’s dog May 13 at Airport Road in Chapmanville after the dog reportedly got loose.

Sgt. L.J. McClung, of the Logan West Virginia State Police detachment, confirmed details of the attack to The Logan Banner Tuesday.

The 5-year-old boy was reportedly playing in the yard with another kid in the neighborhood when the attack happened.

The boy was reportedly bit on his side and back. When his mother tried to help she was bit on her arm.

The dog was then reportedly ran off with a baseball bat and trapped until animal control responded to the scene.

Both were taken to the hospital for their injuries, but the boy was released. McClung said Tuesday that the mother was still in the hospital recovering from her injuries.

McClung said she did not know the extent of the mother’s injuries, but WSAZ reports her arm was chewed down to the bone, and that she has already underwent one surgery with at least two more to come.

McClung said the dog had never been an issue in the past. While criminal charges will not be pursued in the case, McClung said the dog’s owner, and elderly woman, could be held civilly liable.

West Virginia State Police troopers, Logan County Sherriff’s deputies and animal control were all on the scene for the incident.

McClung said Tuesday that the dog was still in the custody on animal control officials. The animal involved was a German Shepherd.
