For well over 100 years, the clockwork pops, hisses and movements of toy trains have delighted collectors and enthusiasts of all ages, and, to further the hobby of model railroading, the Coal River Model Railroad Club hosts an annual model train show.

The Coal River Model Train Show (formerly the Chapmanville Model Train Show) will serve as an outlet for the trading, buying, selling and exposition of model trains as well as an entrance into the world of model railroading for novice collectors and enthusiasts.

The Coal River Model Train Show will run from Saturday Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to Sunday Sept. 13 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Madison Civic Center located at 261 Washington Avenue. The Coal River Model Railroad Club is a non-profit organization that is, “…interested in advancing the hobby of model railroading,” said Jim Chaney, president of the Coal River Model Railroad Club.

While the club operates out of Harts Creek and has around eight members, Chaney explained the Coal River Model Train Show is one of the biggest model train shows in West Virginia, and the exposition often attracts visitors from Pennsylvannia, Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia.

Like many collectors, Chaney explained he was bitten by the model railroad bug when he was given a train set for his third birthday. Chaney’s collection now spans trains that are worth $5 and some that can top $5,000.

“You can find anything and everything at our train show,” added Chaney.
