The City of Logan will host a Tunnel to Tower 5k walk/run Sat., Sept. 12, in Logan. The Tunnel to Tower race is a 5k that takes place all over the Nation to honor those lives that were lost on September 11th. The City of Logan Fire Department and other agencies will lead the first lap in gear to honor the memory of Stephen Siller.
On September 11, 2001, Firefighter Stephen Siller had just gotten off the late shift at Squad 1, Park Slope, Brooklyn, N.Y. He was on his way to play golf with his brothers when his scanner told of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers. When he heard the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later, and then returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.
Siller drove his truck to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it was already closed. So he strapped 60 pounds of gear to his back, rushed on foot through gridlocked traffic and ran from the Tunnel to the Towers where he gave up his life while saving others. For this, the City of Logan will commemorate Siller’s run in a 5k held Sat., September 12.
Siller led a legacy of giving back to others, so through Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation, groups are encouraged to raise money to benefit important causes that give back. The City of Logan Fire Department participates in Operation Santa every year where they work to give every child in Logan a gift for Christmas. Funds raised during the 5k will be used to benefit the Operation Santa program and purchase gifts for children.
Registration for the race is $30 and runners will receive a Stephen Siller Tunnel to Tower run t-shirt and be entered to win various prizes for the race. It will begin at 9 a.m. The race will begin on the Island in front of Logan High School. This race will be professionally timed by Tri State Racer.
