The Leadership Logan Class of 2015 had the opportunity to participate in the 4th leadership session held Thurs., Aug. 20, 2015. The focus of this session was energy. The group traveled to the reclaimed mine land project of Holy Smoke Coal LLC and to Mining Repair Specialists Inc. Owners Dianna and Ronnie Barnette offered a tour of Mining Repair Specialists Inc.’s machine shop.
Bill Raney, President of West Virginia Coal Association, served as guest speaker and spoke about the current challenges of the coal industry. He stated the coal industry has declined because of less demand for electricity globally, the low price of natural gas and the current administration and its EPA regulations.
Later the group was traveled to Appalachian Electric Power in Logan to hear a presentation by Charles Patton, President and Chief Operating Officer of American Electric Power. Patton discussed the process of setting electricity rates as well as the cost of building new power plants versus the cost of updating current power plants to meet current EPA regulations. This Leadership Session was sponsored by American Electric Power.
