LOGAN — With the aim of connecting homeless veterans to the programs and services to which they are entitled, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 308 in Henlawson, in concert with Veterans Affairs in Huntington, the American Red Cross, Workforce W.Va. and Volunteers of America, will participate in a homeless veterans stand-down Sept. 18 through Sept. 20.
The event will take place at the Freewill Baptist Association Church Camp located at 870 Low Gap Road in the Harts area of Logan County. During the event, homeless veterans will be given a place to sleep as well as much-needed food and clothing. Also, veterans will have access to health screenings and assistance with housing, employment and substance abuse counseling.
A press release from the Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter 308 says, “The purpose of a stand-down is to provide a safe retreat for homeless veterans to take care of personal hygiene, enjoy warm meals, receive clothing, enjoy the company of other Veterans and have access to local resources. Stand-downs afford veterans the opportunity to renew their spirit, health and overall sense of well-being.These stand-downs are successful because it brings services and local resources to one location making them more accessible to homeless veterans.”
