Uneeda man charged after child overdoses

GORDON — A 21-month-old child is in stable condition at a Charleston hospital and a Uneeda man was arrested after the child allegedly ingested drugs the man brought to the home.

The Child Abuse Department of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the overdose of the female child.

The child was brought into Boone Memorial Hospital by ambulance and was later transported by HealthNet to Charleston Area Medical Center’s (CAMC) Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Nicholas Corey Price, 26, of Uneeda was arrested by Boone County Sheriff’s deputies and charged him with child neglect resulting in serious injury. This charge is a felony and if convicted, it is punishable with a fine of $300 to $3,000 and one to 10 years in prison.

Price had the drug Buprenorphine (Suboxone) in his possession without a prescription and allowed the small child to gain access to and ingest an unknown amount of the drug, said Boone County Chief Deputy Chad Barker. “The small child was a visitor at a home in Gordon, where Price had been staying recently and is not a relative of Price.”

Barker said Buprenorphine is a schedule III Controlled Substance.

“As serious as our drug problem is, there will be absolutely zero tolerance for something like this,” said Boone County Sheriff Randall White. “We will do our part in holding Price and anyone else who may be involved in this incident accountable for their actions.”

Anyone having information may contact the Child Abuse Department of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at 304-369-0587 and speak to the lead investigator Corporal Mike Foster.

The alleged crime is still under investigation and additional arrests may be forthcoming, the sheriff added.

An arrest is merely a formal allegation of a crime. All suspects should be presumed innocent, until or unless proven guilty in a court of law.
