Former Boone prosecutor dies in jail

CHARLESTON — A former Boone County assistant prosecuting attorney who was an inmate at the South Central Regional Jail in Charleston was found dead Monday night, Sept. 28, according to an official with the jail.

Richard Riffe died by suicide after allegedly hanging himself evidence suggests, Lawrence Messina, spokesman for the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety reported to the media.

Emergency medical staff and regional jail personnel responded and provided first aid, however they were unable to save Riffe, Messina said.

Riffe was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 10 p.m., it was reported.

Riffe was in jail on charges of daytime burglary, battery on an officer and obstructing.

No other details have been released.
