MAN — Man High School’s Environmental Earth Science Class, led by instructor Billy Jack Dickerson, conducted a river clean-up campaign as part of a Project Based Unit on Saturday, September 19th.

The scenic Guyandotte River Valley is quickly becoming a prime tourist destination with its Hatfield McCoy Trails riding system’s network of ATV trails that offer fun outdoor adventures for the whole family. Recently, river kayaking has become popular in the area. However, over the years, the Guyandotte River terrain has become polluted with discarded tires.

After much discussion and planning, the students decided to make their “Let’s Get Rollin” tire clean-up campaign a reality. After about six hours of labor intensive gathering of tires from the river banks and riverbed, the extremely sweaty and muddy clean-up crew had collected more than 250 tires in about a 7-mile stretch of the Guyandotte River.

The 250 tires will be recycled by partner WV Tire Disposal Inc.

The students would like to send their appreciation to Buck West, Chris Trent, Brad Story, Amy Lusk, Randy Bragg, Billy Davis, James and Stephanie Roberts, Brian “Gummie” West, Allen Grimmett, the MHS Staff for their generous donations for food, Amy Lusk for supplying gloves, and George Ellis for supplying his boat.

The organizations that supported the group’s effort included the WV DEP – Sam Spalnaker; Hatfield and McCoy Airboat Tours – Keith Gibson; RD Bailey Lake – Brian Morgan; MHS Junior Class Sponsors – Cora Staten, Lori Justice, Angel McCoy, Alicia Mullins, Tonia Ward, and the WV Tire Disposal Inc. plant at Summersville.

Students involved include: Sammi Sansom, Autumn Copley, Taylor Cardwell, Hailey White, Tiffany Ellis, Trey Roberts, Paige Mitchell, Matt Sanders, Jordan Wright, Jacob Schoolcraft, Megan Justice, Tanner Bailey, Erik Files, Casey Carter, Ashely Kirkland, Jacob Bailey, Stephanie Ramey, Grant Gambill, Cody Collins, Taylor Wenzel, Justin Napier, Lucas Adkins, Christian McCoy, John Thomas Keffer, Josh K.
