DINGESS — Bobby Lee Chafins Jr., 24 of Dingess, West Virginia was pronounced dead on arrival (DOA) after his ATV collided with a 2001 Ford Ranger, Wednesday morning, Nov. 11, near Jamie’s Restaurant on County Rt. 3/5.

The accident occurred around 8:00 a.m. in foggy conditions, according to the police report. Jeffery “B.J.” Marcum, of Breeden, was traveling east toward Williamson when his truck collided with Chafin’s’ Honda ATV, which was heading west.

The ATV was going toward the parking lot of Jamie’s Restaurant when it T-boned with the Ford Ranger pick-up.

Cpl. Phillip Muncy and Sgt. James Muncy of the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department (MCSD), along with members of the West Virginia State Police, investigated the accident. No citations were issued and it is believed that the poor visibility caused by the early foggy conditions played a role in the accident, according to Cpl. P. Muncy.

“The driver of the truck was not at fault,” said Cpl. P. Muncy.

Mike Casey, Mingo County Medical Examiner, pronounced Chafins dead on scene. Chafin’s fiancée, Christina Wiley, also 24, was a passenger on the ATV.

Wiley was transported to Logan Regional Hospital by STAT ambulance service. She was later transferred to CAMC in Charleston with a suspected broken pelvis, a possible broken leg and possible internal bleeding. Wiley is listed as being in critical condition, according to the police report.

Honaker Funeral Home in Logan, W.Va., is in charge of Chafins’ services.
