CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Delegates Joshua Nelson, R-Boone, and Michel Moffatt, R-Putnam, announced they will introduce legislation to place the final authority of accepting refugees from war-torn countries with the West Virginia Legislature.

Under the proposal, no state agency or state resources could be used to help the federal government relocate these refugees to the Mountain State without prior legislative approval, according to Nelson.

Any person or agency that fails to comply with the law would be subject to legal action, he said.

“Nearly 30 states have now stated that they will not accept un-vetted refugees, but West Virginia is still holding out,” Nelson said. “In order to ensure the safety of the public in West Virginia, this legislative action is necessary.”

The bill will be introduced at the start of the next legislative session, which begins Jan. 13.
