West Virginia hunter killed by boulder

WHARTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State Police say a 25-year-old hunter was killed after he and a fellow hunter built a fire and the heat broke apart an overhanging boulder, tumbling on the hunter.

Senior Trooper G.S. Walter said in a statement that that death occurred Monday afternoon, the start of the buck firearms season in the state.

Walter said Donnie Barker III died at the scene in a wooded area in Boone County, in southern West Virginia. Walter said the fellow hunter, 19-year-old Steven Lee Setser, was also injured but managed to make it to a relative’s house for assistance.

Setser was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center General Hospital with injuries that are not life threatening.

Walter said the men had started a fire under the boulder to seek heat.
