LOGAN, W.Va. – West Virginians who are interested in free, in-person help in learning how they might enroll or re-enroll in health insurance under the provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are invited to attend an information and enrollment session on Thursday, December 17, from 1-7 p.m. at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College Logan Campus, inside Building A, Room 111, located at 2900 Dempsey Branch Road, in Mount Gay.
WV NaviCare, working under a cooperative agreement with the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, will provide information about how the new health insurance exchange operates under the ACA. They also will show people how they can sign up for low-cost health insurance plans. No appointment is necessary and there is no charge for this educational session or enrollment assistance.
Financial help is available when signing up for health insurance through the Marketplace. In 2015, 86 percent of West Virginians qualified for financial help in obtaining health care coverage.
The open enrollment period for 2016 ends January 31, 2016. If the deadline is missed, in most cases, you cannot get coverage again until 2017. For 2016, if you do not have health insurance, then you may have to pay a penalty when you file your taxes. The penalty is $695 per person or 2.5 percent of your annual income, whichever is greater.
