WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), along with U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.), announced Fri., June 19, that the Cora Volunteer Fire Department will receive $80,158 in funding through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The funds will go toward operations and safety, and can be used to make health and safety improvements to stations and facilities, to purchase training and protective gear, and equipment for wellness and fitness.
“Our courageous firefighters voluntarily put their lives on the line every day to help protect the people of West Virginia,” Senator Manchin said. “My experience working with the volunteer rescue squad of Marion County has allowed me to appreciate their hard work first hand. This grant will provide our firefighters at the Cora Volunteer Fire Department with the necessary resources to make sure they are trained and equipped to respond to any emergency quickly and efficiently.”
“Our local first responders have dedicated their lives to keeping our communities safe and healthy, and it is critical that they are equipped with the proper tools and techniques to respond quickly and efficiently to emergency situations. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award will enable the Cora Volunteer Fire Department to continue supporting firefighters and keeping our residents safe,” said Senator Capito.
“Firefighters play a very important role in every community, and updated equipment is vital for firefighters to protect our homes and lives. This grant will allow the Cora Volunteer Fire Department to better serve the community, while also ensuring their personal safety. I offer my congratulations to the brave firefighters of the Cora Volunteer Fire Department for being selected for this important grant,” Rep. Jenkins said.
The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. AFG provides firefighters and other first responders with equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
