MADISON, W.Va. — This past weekend the 83rd Annual Boone County Fair was held at Lick Creek Park. The Fair featured inflatables for children, a number of vendors, a room featuring a coal train replica, a room dedicated to W. Va. culture and musical various musical performances throughout.

In the weeks leading up to the fair, there was also a Beauty Pageant held to crown Miss and Mrs Boone County Fair. Tessare Thompson, this year’s Miss Boone County Fair, said she believes it is important to continue to support the fair.

“I think it’s a good think to help show the culture and to get people involved and to come out and have fun. Even though your community might be having a hard time like we are in Boone County, it’s just a good time to relax,” Thompson said.

Virginia Messer, the Treasurer of the Boone County Fair, worked this year to fill the cultural room with quilts, foods and art work from Boone County natives. She agreed that it is important to preserve this aspect of Boone County culture.

“If all of the ones that quilt aren’t here no more than otherwise there won’t be none,” Messer said.

Messer said that a lot of work goes into putting a quilt together and she doesn’t want this information to get lost.

“You sew lines and lines of materials together, then you take a triangle and cut it out and then you start piecing them together,” Messer said.

She said that she and the rest of the Boone County Fair Board work to continue the Fair’s legacy because there is a lot of history there.

“83 years of being around and that’s not counting the years we’re not done because of war or whatever. It takes a lot, we really need to have it,” Messer said.
