Pam Barrett’s third grade class has interesting recipes for baking turkeys. One-half mile west where I now live hundreds of turkeys were raised.


The good news is we can still get turkeys to cook the way you would normally do it or follow some of the special of 15 students who submitted their best recipes.


Their one full page of suggestions appeared in the Metro Putnam section of two prominent newspapers, the Charleston Gazette and the Charleston Daily Mail on Tuesday November 26, 2013.


When I was a junior at East Bank High School, I delivered papers before 6:00 a.m. each morning in the rain, snow, ice and in the beautiful springtime and summer. Up at five, got on the public school bus at seven for a 21 mile trip. I delivered the Charleston Gazette in the small coal mining community of Wevaco, near the head of Cabin Creek in West Virginia.


Here are some of the more interesting suggestions as to how to deliver the turkey to the table for Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other special day.


“I have found my turkey and it weights 117 lbs and is 10 feet high because I have a humongous family. The only spice I’ll use is Old Bay inside and out. It will cook for ten hours at 110 degrees.” — Michael


“I want the size of my turkey to be 20 lbs and 12 in long. I’ll prepare it by cutting off the head and pulling out the giblets. I’ll clean it with a sponge and use Dawn because it kills germs. After that, I will put it in a pan and pop it in the oven for one hour, twenty-one minutes at 250 degrees.” — Arionna


“I preheated the oven to 3000 degrees which I am pretty sure is the temperature of a lightsaber. I placed the turkey in a pot to boil and the oven for 15 minutes.” — Page


“I am looking for a turkey that is 200 pounds. First, I will cut off the head with a knife. Second, I will use hot water and a scrub brush to clean the turkey. Third, I will pluck the feathers and give them to the cat. I will cook the turkey for 12 hours and 5 minutes at 250 degrees.” — Jacob


“My turkey was 25 lbs and 10 in long. I will cook it for 1 hour and 25 min at 100 degrees. I got it out of the oven and it was golden brown.” — Kimmy


For the best results, you may wish to alter some of those recipes slightly.
