HAZARD—The resignation of a local Perry County official came on the heels of a lawsuit filed against his law firm last week by the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Former Perry County Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Josh Mullins resigned last Friday, Commonwealth’s Attorney John Hansen confirmed earlier this week.

“I’ve kind of asked him to reconsider and I’ve not heard back from him, to be honest with you,” Hansen said.

Mullins did not respond to a request for comment as of Friday morning.

Hansen explained the reason for Mullins’ resignation was due to a dispute, but would not elaborate further on the matter.

“It was a dispute between myself and the firm that he works for,” he said.

According to records at the Perry County Courthouse, a suit was filed against Shasta Mullins, individually and as an agent for the Mullins Law Firm, by John Hansen on Oct. 18; a motion for a protective order was also filed by the plaintiff on that day.

Judge Bill Engle filed an order certifying a need for a special judge to be assigned to the case on Oct. 21; however one had not been assigned as of Friday.

Hansen said he and his office will begin looking for candidates to fill Mullins’ position in the next few days.

“He (Mullins) was a good assistant for trials and whatnot, he did great closings, and he will be hard to replace,” Hansen said.

Hansen was sworn into office in January of this year, with Mullins as his assistant, after he beat former Commonwealth’s Attorney Teresa Reed last year.
