The City of Logan was dealt another blow Mon., Feb. 3, when the State Fire Marshal closed their only parking building.

“We knew Friday that the Board of Risks had turned it over to the fire marshal, but we didn’t know he was coming Monday,” City of Logan Mayor Serafino Nolletti said.

The State Fire Marshal informed the Mayor that the building must be closed for immediate repairs following recommendations put forth by the West Virginia State Board of Risk, the City of Logan’s insured.

Nolletti said he had hoped that the office would work with the city and give them time to repair the building.

“Unfortunately, that didn’t happen,” Nolletti said.

Nolletti said there is no estimate on what it will cost the city to repair the building.

“We don’t know how much it is going to cost,” Nolletti said. “Or where the money is going to come from when we find out how much it going to cost. We’ll just have to lay out all our options; whether we try to fix it or… demo it and build a new one.”

Nolletti said the majority of the parking building users were people employed in the city and pay a monthly rental fee.

“We have worked out alternate parking for the rentals,” Nolletti said. “For short term we will use the Tomblin lot (former Hale building site) on Cole Street, and Mike Ferrell is going to let us use the former Aracoma Hotel lot.”

Meanwhile, while those two lots are being prepared, paid parking lot users can park on the West Virginia State Office Building Lot until Fri., Feb. 7.

“That is just for the monthly parkers only,” Nolletti said.
