The City of Logan is painting the town green as Southern Coalition for the Arts and City Hall team up for Shrektember. Logan Mayor Serafino Nolletti is planning to approach the City Council in August to sign an official proclamation naming the month of September “Shrektember.” It’s all in celebration of the upcoming show Shrek the Musical coming to the Coalfield Jamboree Theatre in downtown Logan on September 5-6,12-13, and 14.

Southern Coalition for the Arts has chosen Shrek: The Musical as the show that will reintroduce the magic of theater into the downtown area this Fall. Opening night of Shrek falls during Labor Day weekend, and to celebrate their first big production of the year, members will host a Shrektember block party in downtown Logan on September 2 from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

During the celebration, there will be fun, food, festivities and a chance for 100 people to win free tickets. The only stipulation: tickets will only go to those wearing miner stripes.

“We wanted to celebrate our coal miner’s this labor day,” Managing Director Jamie Butcher said. “It’s just a small gesture of our appreciation for what they do for their families, this town, and our state. We are proud to be able to give them a two hour break where they can sit back and just laugh and enjoy a show with their family.”

Butcher believes this show is perfect for a lot of our Coal Miners.

“It’s full of ‘guy humor,’” Butcher said. “But it also has something for everyone – great love story, excellent music, and a very funny twist on all those fairytales we learned as children.”

The Shrektember celebration will be part of a live remote on WVOW. People will have to tune in between 10:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to learn when and how to win the tickets. Tickets won during the Shrektember celebration will be good for any performance.

Local downtown businesses are also joining in on the Shrektember fun: Hot Cup will have a special drink on sale and Rock City Bakery will be selling a special sweet treat.

Mayor Nolletti is excited about Shrektember as well.

“I think this is a really great thing they’re doing,” Nolletti said. “The Coalfield is highly underutilized, and this is going to be great for the town. We’re looking forward to seeing Shrek.”

The show is being sponsored by a different local business each night:

  • September 5, Logan County Eye Care Society
  • September 6, NECCO
  • September 12, Thornhill Automotive Group
  • September 13, UPS Store of Logan

To sponsor the remaining performance September 14 contact Butcher by calling 304-785-0547.

The show will be held at the Coalfield Jamboree on Sept. 5-6 , 12-13 with an 8 p.m. curtain each night and a matinee on September 14 starting at 3 p.m.. Ticket prices for Shrek will be $10 for adults and $5 for students.
