Not everything is about votes

Editor,

It seems like every day when we turn on the news we encounter images of politicians fighting with each other and getting nothing done. In fact, the political system in the United States seems more irreparably broken now than at any point in our history. We’re slowly turning into a very negative nation where the loudest and crudest voice seems to get all the attention.

This is why my wife and I feel it is important to share our recent experiences with you. I grew up in Logan County but now reside in Florida. About two years ago, after spending a number of years working as Christian missionaries in Haiti, we decided to adopt a set of twins from that nation. We were prepared for a long, emotional struggle and had been told it can sometimes take three to five years to successfully complete an international adoption. However, we were also told that the process has the potential of moving a little more efficiently if you can get a member of Congress to advocate on your behalf.

About eight months into the adoption process we started hitting some major roadblocks. It was at this time we reached out to Congressman Nick Rahall and his Logan field office representative Robby Queen. Although we had never met either of these men in person, from our first conversation with them they threw their arms around our adoption case and began to work tirelessly on our behalf. Countless letters of inquiry were made by Congressman Rahall’s office. We received regular updates and even unsolicited follow-up letters and phone calls by Mr. Rahall personally just to see how we were doing.

Our adoption was an incredibly painful struggle full of emotional highs and lows. There were times when we started to lose complete faith in our government. However, the one bright spot through it all was Congressman Rahall’s office. We were nothing short of astonished at the care and concern they showed us. They had a genuine desire to see our little family become a reality.

On February 22, 2014 we were able to bring our children John and Cora, home to the United States. It took just over two years. But we are confident that this would never have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Congressman and his office staff. Looking back on it now, we are humbled to know that there really are a handful of politicians left out there who honestly care. It was a true testament that not everything is about votes.

It seems these days that the media only wants to focus on the negatives, but it is so much more important for us to celebrate the positives. That’s why we felt it was so important for you to hear our story. While you may not always agree with everything your congressman does, we can speak from personal experience that he is truly a good man who really cares. Thank you Congressman Rahall and Mr. Queen!
