MAN — START (Seniors Taking Active Roles Today) held their monthly meeting Thurs., Nov. 21, at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church.

In celebration of Thanksgiving, tables were adorned in gold covers with mauve and burgundy sheaves of flowers along with metallic pumpkins and fall flowers. The dessert table contained a cornucopia of gourds, pumpkins and vegetables. Members and guests enjoyed a meal full of the traditional “Turkey and all the fixin’s,” along with ham, veggies, delicious salads, fresh baked rolls, and even pizza. The dessert table was so laden that making a decision as to what to have sometimes included having more than one.

Following luncheon, a heart-warming story of Thanksgiving from the past was read by Mrs. Judy Sites.

Those recognized for celebrating birthdays in November included Patty Doczi, Gretchen Donahue, Arthur Brunty, Barbara Brunty, JoAnne Hensley, Betty Gentry and Elizabeth Tackett.

Minutes by Brunty were read and a financial report given by Alice Harrison. As a Christmas project, START will provide for a boy and girl from the Angel Tree of South Man Elementary.

Three members won unusual door prizes. The prizes themselves were not unusual; they were homemade pumpkin rolls. They were unusual in that the pumpkin rolls were part of a Mission Project Donna Thibault is engaged in for the United Methodist Church. Thibault was given $5 “seed money” to see how much she could raise in a year. Thibault chose to use her baking skills for a portion of her fund raising. Calling her baking “Blessed Baked”, she will be taking orders for baked goods, and she also sells homemade pepper jelly, fruit jams and jellies.

Those attending included Lou Arnold, Lessie Bailey, Angeline Bassham, Mayor Jim Blevins, Shirley Brown, Zettie Brown, Arthur Brunty, Gretchen Donahue, Dotty Doczi, Dixie Frazier, Robert Frazier, Betty Gentry, Jane Grimmette, Alice Harrison, Peggy Heatherman, JoAnne Hensley, Elmer Jeffery, Lounice Jeffery, Bill McNeely, Donna McNeely, Ethel Morgan, Peggy Mosley and guests, Helen Nelson, Norma Jean Nelson, Mae Osborne, Robert Perry, Alice Ramiscol, Judy Sites, Rev. Randy Sites, Delores Spears, Merlin Spears, Elizabeth Tackett and her guests Stephen Board and Shaun Walker, Donna Thibault, Paul Thibault, Elaine Thompson, Frank Thompson, Jean Thompson, Garnet Triplett and her guest Eleanor Dugan, Pebble Vance, and Jean Wintz.

The next meeting of START will be held Thursday, December 19, at noon at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church.

“Come join us,” START president Gretchen Donahue said.
