The January monthly meeting of START (Seniors Taking Active Rolls Today) met at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church Thurs., Jan. 30, 2014.

Thirty folks were glad to be able to get out and about after all the snow which had that caused the postponement of the regular meeting.

The feeling of “Love” was in the air as the fellowship hall was decorated for Valentine’s Day. Red tablecloths were the setting for pink place mates and miniature pink, white and red mailboxes, with child-like valentines. Garlands with hearts ran the length of each table, while mobiles of hearts hang from the ceiling. Door prizes wrapped in red paper with big red bows served as the centerpiece of the food table.

A smorgasbord of food was available for enjoying from meatloaf, to chicken, to soups, to salads and desserts. START’s resident baker, Zettie Brown, baked and decorated a heart-shaped cake.

Those members who had perfect attendance for 2013 were recognized. They included Lessie Bailey, Angie Bassham, Arthur Brunty, Barbara Brunty, Gretchen Donahue, JoAnne Hensley, Elmer Jeffery, Lounice Jeffery, Norma Jean Nelson, Judy Sites, Deloris Spears, and Merlin Spears.

Paul Thibault spoke to the group about the possibility of developing a system to help folks in our area. He referenced a television program that showed other areas with such a program. He asked members to check it out various web sites and the idea would be discussed at a later meeting.

The bad roads caused by the recent snow gave rise to the question of having regular luncheons. It was decided that if school were canceled, START would be canceled. A phone tree was also set up to notify of any changes. START appreciates that WVOW radio aired their announcement of the canceled meeting so quickly.

Those attending the January meeting were Patty Amburgey, Lou Arnold, Shirley Brown, Zettie Brown, Arthur Brunty, Barbara Brunty, Gretchen Donahue, Bob Frazier, Dixie Frazier, Jane Grimmette, Alice Harrison, JoAnne Hensley, Elmer Jeffery, Lounice Jeffery, Bill McNeely, Donna McNeely, Peggy Mosley, Judy Sites, Rev. Randy Sites, Deloris Spears, Merlin Spears, Barbara Spears, Elizabeth Tackett, Donna Thibault, Paul Thibault, Frank Thompson, Elaine Thompson, Joan Thompson, Pebble Vance, and Jean Wintz.

The next meeting will be held Thurs., Feb. 27, at noon at Bruce McDonald Memorial United Methodist Church.
