Federal funding will be given to Logan and Mingo Counties to upgrade first responder equipment and facilities.

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, along with Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin (all D-W.Va.), made the announcement Friday.

“Our first responders must have the right equipment and facilities to ensure the safety of our communities,” said Rahall. “These investments in public safety infrastructure will not only pay dividends today for citizens in Logan and Mingo Counties, they are a down payment on our State’s future in attracting new businesses and job opportunities and being economically competitive.”

“The well-being of our communities depends on the ability of our first responders to successfully do their jobs,” said Rockefeller. “This funding for Logan and Mingo Counties will make sure local police and fire departments have immediate access to the facilities and vehicles they need to keep West Virginians safe.”

the City of Chapmanville Building Commission will receive a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development low-interest Community Facility Loan of $1,430,000 to assist in the construction of the Tracy Vickers Municipal Complex to house the town’s offices and fire and police departments.

“Our law enforcement and first responders put themselves in the line of danger each and every day for the safety of West Virginians,” said Manchin. “It is important to provide them with the resources and tools necessary to respond efficiently. This funding will greatly benefit the residents of Logan and Mingo counties by helping purchase state-of-the-art vehicles and a brand new facility that will ensure our first responders can be dispatched as quickly as possible when West Virginians are in need.”

USDA Rural Development also approved a $17,000 Community Facility Economic Impact Initiative Grant for the City of Williamson/Williamson Police Department to assist in the purchase of two vehicles: one to be used as a police cruiser and the other will be a 4x4 to be used in inclement weather and to pull their DUI check point trailer.

USDA Rural Development provides low-interest loans and grants to communities to help support essential community facilities for public use in rural areas, including child care centers, hospitals, medical clinics, fire, rescue and police stations, and other public buildings and transportation to ensure that such facilities are available to all rural residents.
